Simprints & Cohesu: Integrating biometrics into our field operations
Updated: Aug 15, 2020
In March 2017, COHESU partnered with Simprints to integrate novel biometric hardware and software tools into our programmes to accurately identify and serve our beneficiaries and streamline our operations. The pilot phase of this partnership being the Shoe giving and jiggers tracking / treatment regimens just so as to ensure no beneficiary is overlooked.
Simprints is a nonprofit tech company committed to fighting poverty. Simprints builds
biometric hardware and open-source software to empower the mobile tools used by researchers, NGOs, and governments worldwide. Recognising a significant gap in current biometric technology, Simprints has developed an open-source fingerprint system for the world’s toughest settings that is 228% more accurate and 4x cheaper than existing solutions.
COHESION™ is our fledgling homegrown in-house Android application specifically built to helps us oversee field-based operations. The first phase has seen it implemented to tackle the jiggers menace.
Simprints biometric scanner integrated into COHESION has played a major role in COHESU's school-based programs. These systems enable COHESU to accurately identify individual students throughout our program timeline regardless of location. Furthermore, being able to uniquely identify an individual means COHESION is able to tag specific information to them. For instance, other biometric data such as age, gender, height, weight, or even more interesting data such as their infection status, timestamps of their enrolment and treatment, or even their geo-location.
This opens up the ability to identify emerging patterns that would otherwise have been difficult to spot. With the data we collect during the school-based programs we will be able to geo-tag infections with great granularity as well as analyze the effectiveness of our treatment cycles which will allow us to quantify our impact!
COHESION is constantly undergoing iterations. We foresee a great future in its service to the operations of COHESU all the way from simplified mapping and beneficiary enrolments to emerging data and patterns.
In April of 2017 Simprints embarked on an exercise to have COHESU trained on the use of their Vero Scanners for biometric identifications. For two weeks starting April 24th to May 5th, 2017 both COHESU & Simprints were privileged to have their partnership move to the next level by sharing their expertise and platforms for a greater good.
This included the rollout phase of actually engaging schools in the shoe giving enrolment exercises which Simprints had the chance to experience first hand and see their contributions yield great results within COHESU’s grand scheme of things to come. In the Field front, Simprints was able to soak up the momentous weight of working with children within resource-limited settings. Albeit the challenges and hurdles of far-flung locations and intensive fieldwork.
